How to emulate the Windows Logo key   IBM Thinkpad Windows logo key

IBM has a utility called the "Thinkpad Keyboard Customizer Utility", this
utility allows you to change say the right alt or ctrl key to the Windows
key, or to the applications key.

Vista's ReadyBoost  feature allows you to plug in a USB flash drive or a flash memory card and use its contents to cache frequently used files. Surprisingly, this feature really works, and with the cost of 1GB+ flash drives these days it's a cheap way to speed up a system without having to remove the cover.

ReadyBoost: limited testing suggests that the gains range from modest to downright nonexistent.

The USB flash drive speed champ in is the Apacer Handy Steno model HT-203 drive.

Microsoft recommends a drive that is at least equal in capacity to the amount of RAM installed on your system.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

DHCP Client Service may not automatically.

When you attempt to start the Service manually, the following error may be displayed:

Error: Could not start the DHCP Client Service on local computer

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

The DHCP Client Service in Windows XP, depends on these three components:

AFD

NetBios over Tcpip

TCP/IP Protocol Driver

If one of the above drivers fail to start, then the DHCP Client Service may not start.

Step I - Make sure that the three driver files are present

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to %Windir%\System32\Drivers folder. Make sure that the following files are present in the folder:

afd.sys

tcpip.sys

netbt.sys

If one or more of the above driver files are missing, extract them from the Windows XP CD-ROM or from the ServicePackFiles\i386 folder, whichever is the latest version.

To view the dependency services registered for DHCP Client Service,
type the following command in Start, Run dialog:

 CMD /K SC QC DHCP

 [SC] GetServiceConfig SUCCESS

 SERVICE_NAME: dhcp

SERVICE_START_NAME : LocalSystem

If any other additional drivers or Services are mentioned in
the DEPENDENCIES section, you need to remove them via the registry.
Follow these steps:

Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe

Navigate to the following branch:

Backup the branch to a REG file

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Dhcp

Double-click DependOnService value and set its data as follows:

XP folders always read only attribute

Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer. The Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view customized by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box. As a result, Windows Explorer does not allow you to view or change the Read-only or System attributes of folders. When a folder has the Read-Only attribute set it causes Explorer to request the Desktop.ini of that folder to see if any special folder settings need to be set. It has been seen where if a network share that has a large amount of folders set to Read-only, it can cause Explorer to take longer then what is expected to render the contents of that share while it waits on the retrieval of the Desktop.ini files. The slower the network connectivity to the share the longer this process can take to the point where Explorer may timeout waiting for the data and render nothing or appear to hang.

Gain control of those "Access Denied Folders"

1) Log on to the computer with an account that is setup as an Administrator. If you are using XP Home, you must boot into safe mode, and then log on to an account that has Admin access in order to access the security tab.

2) If you are using xp pro, the first thing you must do is disable Simple File Sharing. In a folder menu, click Tools, then Folder Options.

3) In the "View" tab, scroll down until you see "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)". Turn that off. Then close the "Folder Options" window.

4) Right-click the folder that you want to take control of, and then click Properties. You should see 4 tabs that say "general", "sharing", "Security", and "Customize". Click the Security tab.

5) Next, click the "Advanced" tab, and then click the Owner tab.

6) In the user list, click the user name or you want have access to the folder, or click Administrator if you are logged in as the Administrator. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder you originally selected, click the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

7) Next, click OK, and then select Yes when you receive the message:

"You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?"

Click "Yes". This will transfer ownership of the folder over to whomever you selected.

Note: the “0″ above is a zero.

If you get a response like the following, the mount worked and you will be able to access your Linux partition in My Computer.

The mount command is pretty obvious, and mounts your partition. The zero references your hard drive. If you are like most users and only use one hard drive, then you will want to leave the zero. If you use multiple hard drives then you will need to change that number appropriately.

Lots of desktop icons ? - Change the icon cache size in Windows XP Pro

With a quick change in the Windows XP registry, you can increase
the icon cache that XP uses to store icon information.
Doing so will speed up desktop refreshes on your computer.

By default, Windows XP doesn't reserve a lot of memory for icon caching.
By sacrificing a little bit of RAM, you can speed up perceived workstation performance.

When the Registry Editor opens, navigate through the left pane until you get to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer.
In the right pane, look for the value named Max Cached Icons.

f the value exists, it's probably set to 500, which is the default value for the key.
To change the value, double-click it. You'll then see the Edit String screen.
Enter a value of 2000 in the Value Data field and click OK.

If the value doesn't exist, you'll need to add it. Select New | String Value from
the Edit menu. The new value will appear in the right pane, prompting you for
a value name. Type Max Cached Icons and press [Enter]. Make sure you
separate each word with a space. The proper value is Max Cached Icons,
not MaxCachedIcons.
Double-click the new value. You'll then see the Edit String screen.
Enter a value of 2000 in the Value Data field and click OK.

Security - Group Policy Editor for Windows XP Pro (not a feature in Home Edition)

One of the most full featured Windows XP configuration tools available is hidden right there in your system, but most people don't even know it exists. It's called the Local Group Policy Editor, or gpedit for short. To invoke this editor, select Start and then Run, then type the following: gpedit.msc After you hit ENTER, you'll be greeted by gpedit, which lets you modify virtually every feature in Windows XP without having to resort to regedit.

Control how Windows Explorer opens

Right-click on the Windows Explorer icon or shortcut that you use most often (you can do it to all the others as well) and click Properties. In the Target box you should add the following ‘switches’ to the end of the command line: /n,/e,c: .These will tell Windows Explorer to open in the root of your C: drive. If you are using another drive or want it to open somewhere else just change the c: at the end. To save you the effort of typing it all in (and if you do note that there is a space in front of ‘/n’ and don't forget the two commas), just copy and paste the following command
into the Target box: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:

Using a cellphone -- even with a hands-free device -- may distract drivers because the brain cannot handle both tasks, U.S. researchers said.

BATCH COMMANDS

For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.

Annoyed by XP asking for registration again & again?

Users who are troubled by registrations reminders every now and then. Before you begin, make sure PC must not be connected to the network. During XP setup answer no when setup asks you to use Windows Dynamic Update. Dynamic update connects to Microsoft to register XP. Once the installation is completed, reboot to Safe mode. Go to Windows Explorer and rename %systemroot%\System32\regwizc.dll and %systemroot%\System32\Dllcach\regwizc.dll to regwizc.dll.bak or whatever. By renaming the regwizc DLL, it blocks other windows components from registering XP to Microsoft. Now, navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion] and look for the data key "RegDone" and set its value to 1 to make XP believe that its registered . Change the IE home page to something besides Microsoft's web site. Reboot to Normal mode and reconnect your nic card before the XP Windows GUI loads.
